Reference Photo Requirements & Tips

I become passionate and involved with each piece I am creating and am dedicated to grasping the character and expressions, the personality and the connection you and your pet share.   For me, the eyes become the catalyst to capturing the subject.  While I will get to know your pet and those special moments or memories you have through our communication, it is a good quality high-resolution reference photo that truly allows me to visually represent all the wonderful characteristics. See below for some tips on what makes a photo a 'good quality, high-resolution' reference photo.  If you have photos and are unsure if they are ideal to use, please feel free to email them to me and I will let you know whether they are suitable for use.

These are great examples of photos that would make the perfect portrait.

  • High resolution photo taken with a digital camera.

  • Taken outside in natural daylight. (Not direct sunlight)

  • Taken inside with direct light and no shadows or discoloration

  • The photo is taken at the same level as the dog.

  • When zooming in, we can see a lot of detail in the face and a good reflection in the eyes. A good way of testing whether a photo is detailed enough is to zoom in on the face. If you can see the individual hairs on the dog’s coat, then it is a high enough resolution for me to work from.

Bad Photo: Artificial Light and Out of Focus

This photo would not work as the dog is out of focus and blurry.

Bad photo: Distance

The smaller Dachshund on the chair is too far away, at this distance, when zoomed in the photo

will become blurry or pixelated and lose detail
